You can find recipes for pasta anywhere. You probably learned a dozen from your mother before moving out. So why an article with more pasta recipes? Because today, we are going to teach you how to double your complete repertoire for camping recipe with one simple technique. And we are going to use pasta to show you how. That’s right: anything you knew about pasta and the recipes you have for them will be doubled in a couple of minutes. Because we are going to make camping recipes from all of them. By dehydrating pasta, you not only make it lighter (useful when backpacking) and lengthen the shelf life (even outside of the fridge), it will also create a deeper and richer taste in all those camping recipes you have cooked so far.
Yes. Drying pasta. and you are right: the pasta you buy in the supermarket is allready dry. So you litteraly don’t have to do anything at all to the pasta itself. We are just going to dry the pastasauce. We did this before with oatmeal with bananas and peanut butter, which is a great camping recipe for breakfast. Basically all you need to do is cook your favorite pastasauce, without actually adding the pasta itself. Then you will dry the sauce in a good food dehydrator, grind it when it’s dry and put it in a freezer bag together with the pasta. We used the easiest recipe for pasta we could possibly find. The technique is applicable to any pasta recipe and most camping recipes you can come up with.
Brown the ground beef, cut and add the garlic. Wait a minute before adding the veggies. Stirfry the whole thing for five minutes. Add all tomato-related ingredients to the mix and pour in some wine if you like. Season to taste. Let it thicken on a low burner. If you feel the sauce isn’t liquid enough, add a little stock or wine, or both. When the sauce is done you can add the cheese, but you can also wait until you are at your campsite and add it when you heat it above a campfire. That’s what we did.
Use a sheet of greaseproof paper as a layer for in the dehydrator. You can take a rack, put it upside down on the paper and draw the outlines with a marker. Cut it out, fold it neatly a couple of times and puncture it a couple of times with something sharp and pointy, like a saute-pen. This will allow the dry air to reach the bottom of the sauce as well. The holes should be too small for the sauce to trickle through.
Put the sheets on the racks of the dehydrator and spread the sauce over them as thin as possible.
Let the dehydrator run on full power for a night.
The next morning the sauce should have become dry slabs, and you should be able to easily peel them of the sheets.
The drying process also enhanced the flavor, making sure your all your future pasta camping recipes have a deep and rich taste!
Put the sheets of pasta in a blender and grind them up to a powder.
Put that powder back in the dehydrator for an hour or two, and you’re done!
Put about half of the powder (should be around 150 grams) with half the dried pasta in a freezer bag. Roll it up tight to let all the air out, and seal it. You now have a cheap, dry camping meal which keeps for a lon time in the freezer. The same method applies to a lot of camping recipes, especially pasta. Preparing the pasta
Before you leave the house, check the cooking time for the dry pasta. Because that’s the time you need to dehydrate your meal. One option is to add boiling water to the freezer bag, stir and seal the bag and wait for it to be done. The warmth of the water will stay in the freezer bag long enough for it to cook. This method doens’t need any washing up after, either. You could also add the dried meal to the same amount of boiling water in a pan above a campfire. Disadvantage: the dishes. Advantage: the food is more evenly heated and it’s more fun with a campfire. After approximately 7 to 10 minutes you will have pimped up a camping recipe you allready knew, kept it just as healthy and nourishing, but made it lighter and added a great and deep richness to the flavor!
